‘211 Navy personnel & associates among cases’

Director General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe says A majority of the new coronavirus cases reported over the past few days are Navy personnel attached to the Welisara Navy Camp.

Speaking during a media briefing at the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak today Dr. Jasinghe said 148 Navy personnel were identified to have contracted the coronavirus from within the camp.

He noted that another 50 Navy personnel were on leave when they were confirmed to have contracted the virus.

Dr. Jasinghe stated that 13 persons who associated Navy personnel have also tested positive.

The Director General of Health Services stated that 1,553 PCR tests were conducted during 24 hours that ended at 5pm yesterday.

Dr. Jasinghe stated that the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital, that commenced testing, also contributed to the number of tests.

Eight persons tested positive for the coronavirus today.

The number of total cases reported in the country increased to 596.

Director General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe said five cases reported today were Navy personnel while the other three were reported from the Punani quarantine centre.

Eight persons who contracted the coronavirus recovered and were discharged today increasing the number of recoveries to 134.
