An individual who was recently released from prison has been arrested on charges of sexually abusing and murdering a 78-year-old woman inside her residence in Dewalagama, Kegalle.
The 28-year-old suspect has been arrested by the Kegalle Police.
The suspect who was imprisoned over drug offences had been recently released and placed under self-isolation at his residence.
The man is reported to have entered the elderly woman’s house through the roof last night, while she was sleeping alone.
The Police said the suspect had stolen money and jewellery from the house, after which he has sexually abused the woman, resulting in her death or murder.
The Magisterial inquiry into the death was conducted by Kegalle Chief Magistrate Shalika Navaratne yesterday.
The suspect has been detained for questioning by the Police, while the Kegalle Police is conducting further investigations into the incident.
