Low income families will face a severe food crisis due to rising inflation in the country, says Dr. Priyanga Dunusinghe of the University of Colombo.
He says there is also a possibility of malnutrition in those families.
He further stated that
“The purchasing power of low-income people is declining rapidly, leading to issues such as poverty and malnutrition, especially the low-income urban poor, the rural poor, and especially the plantation sector, which basically accounts for about 50% of their income. In such a situation, the increase in food prices in this way will lead to them consuming less food or spending heavily on non-food items such as education, health, transportation and other expenses. The worst case scenario is likely to be long-term. “
