China’s steadfast support throughout helped Sri Lanka – Prime Minister

China is a true decisive global leader, especially with its leadership and assistance in Asia, Africa, and Latin America and towards the prosperity of all Nations, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said.

Speaking at the 73rd Chinese National Day Anniversary Celebrations organized by China-Sri Lanka Friendship Associations at Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel on Wednesday (28), the Premier appreciated China’s steadfast support to Sri Lanka, stating that it has been a “Kalyana Mitra”, a special friend in times of happiness as well sorrow, to Sri Lanka.

“Even in the present situation China has assured further support for attracting investments, cooperation, and tourism to Sri Lanka,” he noted.

The Prime Minister admired that China has emerged strong in the path of Socialism with Chinese characteristics, adding that a new era of development began with the birth of the People’s Republic of China.

Highlighting that the Rice-Rubber pact greatly enhanced trade, aid, and investments between the two countries, Gunawardena observed that China always respects Sri Lanka’s independence, sovereignty, safeguarding of the Unitary State, territorial integrity, and Buddhism when it comes to diplomatic relations. “President Xi Jingping recently said that China and Sri Lanka should be praised for setting an example of friendly coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation between countries.

“Non-Aligned foreign policy of the Progressive MEP Government of 1956 established formal diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and China in 1957, and this stands out as an historic occasion as this year we celebrate the 65th anniversary of China-Sri Lanka diplomatic relations.
