Did the Sri Lankan government pay for Gotabhaya’s private flight to Bangkok?

Former President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is still living according to the privileges of a President, says Cabinet Media Spokesperson Minister Acharya Bandula Gunawardena.

The minister said this today (16), in response to a question asked by a journalist at the press conference to inform the cabinet decisions held today.

Former President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa used a private plane to fly from Singapore to the capital city of Bangkok, Thailand, which was paid for by the Government of Sri Lanka and was asked by a journalist if he is still living under presidential privileges.

Minister Acharya Bandula Gunawardena who replied said,

“Yes. According to the Presidential Election Act of Sri Lanka, there are legal provisions on the rights and privileges of the former and current president of the country. After the passing away of a former president, the lady also has a responsibility to provide such protection in my opinion.

Hema Premadasa, the wife of a former president, Ranasinghe Premadasa, is also entitled to the same rights and privileges in terms of security, the minister further stated.
