Government is compelled to re-open the country – Bandula

Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Bandula Gunawardena says the government is compelled to re-open the country to save the livelihoods of the public.

Speaking during the weekly Cabinet Media briefing, Minister Gunawardena said the country needs to be re-opened for businesses even if covid-19 cases surface in the Western Province.

He said the spread of the novel coronavirus is under control at present and the new cases are limited to clusters.

Minister Gunawardena noted that discussions are underway with health authorities to review the situation in the country including travel arrangements.

He said the country and the people are compelled to live with coronavirus as measures are required to be taken to carry forward economic activity.

Minister Bandula Gunawardena said even some developing countries that have reported higher number of cases and fatalities are now easing restrictions.

He said the government is focused on strengthening the economy and support the people.

The Cabinet Spokesperson confirmed that unless the situation in the country deteriorates in the next few days, curfew restrictions will be eased from next Monday.
