If you charge more bus fares, it is wrong !

National Transport Commission (NTC) Director General Nilan Miranda says raids have been initiated to take legal action against bus operators for charging bus fares higher than the revised bus fare.

He said the raids were conducted following complaints received by the National Transport Commission that some private buses were charging more than the revised fare.

The National Transport Commission has informed all passenger transport authorities to deploy all their mobile inspectors to investigate incidents in provincial buses. Furthermore, the Director General said that several mobile inspection teams attached to the National Transport Commission have also been deployed.

Mr. Nilan Miranda says that some bus owners and conductors involved in these incidents have been fined and legal action has been taken and arrangements have been made to refund the extra money charged from the passengers.

He further said that since last Friday (5), raids have been conducted on nearly 100 inter-provincial buses, but information about the provincial buses has not been received yet. But he also mentioned that the provincial offices have been informed to conduct individual raids and investigations.

Before taking this legal action, the National Transport Commission had conducted many awareness programs such as publishing the revised bus fares. Later, the bus drivers advised us to display the latest bus fare revision prominently in the buses. The Director General further said that raids were started across the country with limited inspection teams.
