Jeyaraj Murder Case: Former SP & Ex-LTTE cadre acquitted and released

Former SP for Gampaha A. Lakshman Cooray, and Ex-LTTE Cadre Selvarajah Piribahakaran aka ‘Morris’ were acquitted and released from the Jeyaraj Fernandopulle assassination.

The two men were charged and indicted for the murder of Former Minister the late Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, and 15 others in 2008.

The verdict was delivered by Gampaha Number 01 High Court Judge Sahan Mapa Bandara on Thursday (1).

Jeyaraj Fernandopulle was killed in a suicide bomb attack, carried out by an LTTE terrorist on 6th April 2008 when he was participating in a New Year festival at Weliweriya.

At the time of his death, he was the Minister of Highways and Road Development, Chief Government Whip, Treasurer of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, and Member of Parliament for Gampaha district.

On the 12th of August 2009, the then SP for Gampaha Laksham Cooray was arrested citing direct links to the suicide bomb attack that claimed the life of Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, and others.
