Karapitiya Children’s Cancer Ward closed

The Children’s Ward at the Karapitiya, Galle Teaching Hospital, Cancer Unit has been closed down completely.

Construction of this paediatric ward had been completed about one and a half years   ago and sources connected to the Karapitiya Hospital said that steps have been taken to keep it closed without opening it at all.

A spokesman of the Karapitiya Galle Hospital said that 250 child cancer patients had already been registered for treatment at thisward.This ward at the Karapitiya hospital has been built for 10 patients to receive complete residential treatment.

The ward has been constructed with modern facilities such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy units. Karapitiya Hospital sources said that a situation has arisen where valuable equipment is getting destroyed since arrangements are not being made to open the ward. Apart from the Apeksha Hospital at Maharagama, it is only at the Galle, Karapitiya Teaching Hospital that a ward has been specially constructed for child cancer patients. A large number of patients from the Badulla, Wellawaya, Ella, Moneragala, Ampara and Batticaloa districts seek treatment at this hospital.Karapitiya Hospital sources said that a paediatric cancer specialist, two senior doctors, a staff of trained nurses and two junior workers were recommended to be appointed for this ward.
