Labour Commissioner tasked with probe on Brandix outbreak

Labour Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva had directed the Labour Commissioner to conduct an inquiry on the alleged discrimination against Brandix employees who had shown symptoms of the viral infection while on duty and file a report, Cabinet Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said.

He said the government does not see any reason to take the Brandix apparel factory to the task at this moment, he said.

“It is not possible to strictly apply COVID-19 related health guidelines and security protocol on foreign diplomats. It is quite obvious that it is not possible to subject a visiting foreign minister and his entourage to 14 days quarantine when they remain less than 48 hours in Sri Lanka and do not associate with Sri Lankan public or visit many places,” he said.

“In fact, they do not pose any threat to Sri Lankans as we demand them a PCR test report before the arrival and also during their short official tour. This protocol is common to the top-level Chinese diplomatic delegation and also to any other diplomatic delegation visiting Sri Lanka in future.
