Former UNP MP Sandith Samarasinghe yesterday said the claim made by former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya that he had obtained life membership of the UNP is false.
“The 1000M membership drive was not aimed at distributing lifetime membership of UNP,” he said.
Also, he said, Mr. Jayasuriya had not contributed from his salary from 2015 to party funds as done by other UNP members.
Meanwhile, former UNP MP and Working Committee member Vajira Abeywardene said the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) was engaged in a conspiracy to destroy the UNP by inviting the former Speaker to join it’s fold.
“Talking about appointing Mr. Jayasuriya as the new UNP leader is a joke,” Mr. Abeywardene said in a statement yesterday.
“The talk about appointing Mr. Jayasuriya as the UNP leader is a conspiracy. The conspiracy is planned as it is not possible for the SJB to capture the UNP legally and the plan is to capture the party through Mr. Jayasuriya,” he added.
