Private sector employees will not be dismissed

It has been decided at a discussion Chaired by Minister of Labor Dinesh Gunawardena that no private sector employees will be removed from their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision was reached at a discussion between the special Trilateral Task Force appointed by the Minister and representatives of the Ceylon Employers Federation and trade unions.

The Ministry of Labor stated that a number of decisions related to the private sector and its employees were reached.

Amongst the decisions reached is the reopening of all private institutions while adhering to health guidelines, and maintaining operations from next week while protecting workspaces from coronavirus.

It was also decided that institutions must pay salaries along with stipulated allowances for the duration at work, while 50% of the basic salary or more than Rs.14,500 should be paid.

It was also decided to deposit the Employees’ Provident Fund and Employees’ Trust Fund appropriately.

The arrangements will be applicable to the months of May and June while the Task Force will convene once again in June.
