Railway Department’s Planning Director J.A.D.R. Pushpakumara said that in a suburban city like Colombo, tourists who enter through the main entrance of the museum can experience the railway subculture made of gas lamps, rail cars, railway platforms, steam engines, coal and uniforms worn by the officers in the past. He said that it is more appropriate to call this village as a railway museum village rather than just a museum because of the ancient railway culture of our country, which attracts tourists from home and abroad.Visitors will not only see old engines but also parts of the subculture associated with trains.
Work on this began in 2018 when B.A.P.Ariyaratne was Railways General Manager. He said that students who are interested in railways and are engaged in academic activities also will be facilitated in such a way that they can engage in their studies here.
He said that he believed that the railway tourism business could be improved through this. He said that it was special that some of the engines on display were not available in the country from which they were imported or in the parent company in those countries.
