SLC lifts ban on Danushka Gunathilaka

Danushka Gunathilaka, who was last month acquitted of sexual assault charges in Sydney, will be free to return to playing cricket after Sri Lanka Cricket ratified the recommendation of an independent inquiry committee.

SLC imposed an indefinite ban on Gunathilaka in November last year, when he was charged and arrested on allegations of sexual assualt by a Sydney woman while the cricketer was travelling with the national team at the T20 World Cup 2022.

“After careful evaluation of Mr. Gunathilaka’s exoneration and with due consideration to his cricketing career and its impact on the cricketing ambitions of the nation, the Inquiry Panel, headed by Retired High Court Judge, Sisira Ratnayake, Mr. Niroshana Perera, Attorney at Law and Mr. Asela Rekawa Attorney at Law, unanimously recommended an immediate lifting of his cricketing ban, allowing him to resume regular cricket activities and return to national duty,” SLC said in a media statement.

Gunathilaka was already serving a one-year suspended sentence, for his involvement in the breach of the bio-bubble during Sri Lanka’s tour of England in July in 2021.
