In view of the current economic crisis in the country, the government has decided to provide an additional allowance for three months to low income families.
Trade Minister Shehan Semasinghe addressing a media briefing on the current Cabinet decisions said.
Accordingly, the relief will be given to the identified beneficiary families from May to July, the Minister said.
The proposal made by Hon. Minister of Finance and Minister of Samurdhi Development, to proceed with the relevant activities, was approved by the Cabinet.
Accordingly, it is planned to provide the allowance under several categories.
The government will spend Rs. 13,364 million per month on the estimated cost of Rs. 4,455 million per month, mainly for 3.34 million family units, the Minister said.

An allowance of Rs. 5,000 plus Rs. 3,000 in addition to the old age allowance currently received at Rs. 2,000
2,500 in addition to the senior citizens who are currently receiving Rs. 5,000 as a seniority allowance over 100 years
An allowance of Rs. 5,000 for those who have registered for the Elderly Allowance
Beneficiaries currently receiving a disability allowance of Rs. 5,000 plus Rs. 2,500
Disability Allowance An allowance of Rs. 5,000 for persons on the waiting list
2,500 in addition to the current allowance of Rs. 5,000 for kidney patients
Rs. 5,000 for people on the waiting list for kidney disease allowance
Additional allowances are available to the three main categories of persons who are currently receiving Samurdhi and those who are on the waiting list.
Accordingly, persons who are currently receiving a Samurdhi allowance of Rs. 1,900 will be entitled to a sum of Rs. 3,100.
Accordingly, persons who are currently receiving a Samurdhi allowance of Rs. 3,200 will be entitled to an amount of Rs. 3,100.
People who are currently receiving a Samurdhi allowance of Rs. 4,500 will be entitled to a sum of Rs. 3,000.
Meanwhile, an allowance of Rs. 5,000 per month will be given to 732,000 families applying for the Samurdhi allowance for the next three months.
