Vessel carrying 60,000MT of coal reaches Norochcholai

A vessel carrying 60,000MT of coal has reached Sri Lanka.

The Ministry of Power and Energy said the vessel arrived at the Norochcholai Jetty this morning is the first of the six coal vessels due to reach Sri Lanka this month.

Following formalities, unloading of the vessel will begin.

Payments have been made to all six cargos.

The Ceylon Electricity Board meanwhile said the third generator of the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant will be added to the National Grid on Sunday.

Trade unions and the Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka, Janaka Ratnayake have repeatedly said lengthy power cuts will be imposed from this month due to issues in procuring coal for the Norochcholai Power Plant.

However, Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera has said they are taking all steps to procure required coal and minimize the power cut durations.
