Weerawansa, Gammanpila bow down to 20A before President’s emotional speech?

The provision of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution allowing dual citizens to enter Parliament was strongly objected by a number of members representing the Ruling Party, forefront of which, Wimal Weerawansa of Jathika Nidahas Peramuna and Udaya Gammanpila of Pivithuru Hela Urumaya were the centre of attention.

The President had summoned the parties objecting the 20A last (21) night for a special discussion. These groups are currently holding a press conference regarding the outcome of the meeting.

Speaking at the con Udaya Gammanpila of Pivithuru Hela Urumaya noted that they agreed to back the 20A following discussion with the President.

Addressing the meeting, the President made an emotional speech demonstrating on the current situation, Gammanpila added, emphasising that they agreed to vote in favour of the amendment, despite the dual citizenship dispute.

The Pivithuru Hela Urumaya leader also said that President had promised to completely remove the opportunity for dual citizens to enter Parliament through the adapted new constitution.
