Cyber crime on the rise !

Senior Police Media Spokesman, Senior DIG Ajith Rohana states that there is an increase in the number of cyber crime complaints received daily.

He said that although the number of complaints received was around 2,500 a year in the past, the situation has changed and now it receives between 15 and 20 complaints a day.

He said that women are the biggest victims of cyber crimes in Sri Lanka.

He said those who forged and photographed women creating and distributing pornographic videos and pornographic images could be arrested without a warrant and face up to three years in prison.

The senior police spokesman also said that those who break into a computer and steal data could be imprisoned for up to 7 years.

He further stated that even if someone commits a cyber crime from abroad, if it applies to a Sri Lankan person, there are legal provisions to take legal action in this country.
